THE LOST CONTINENT, CAT O'NINE TAILS, and LIGHTNING BOLT
Weird Hammer Film action, classic Italian Giallo, and pure corny Eurospy trash make up
this entry on my Supernatural Theater blog.
First up -----This is one far out movie! Only in the 1960's!

A Hammer Film Production
THE LOST CONTINENT
Starring Eric Porter, Hildegard Knef, Suzanna Leigh, and Tony Beckley
With Nigel Stock, Neil McCallum, Benito Carruthers, Jimmy Hanley, Michael Ripper
Produced, directed, and written by Michael Carreras
England --- 1968
Helpless beauties attacked by the kelp crazed monsters!
Blood beasts battling over female flesh!
Now that's what I call great advertising copy !!!!!!!!!
Helpless beauties attacked by the kelp crazed monsters!
Blood beasts battling over female flesh!
Now that's what I call great advertising copy !!!!!!!!!
Flesh eating seaweed, giant hungry crabs, a busty balloon girl, Spanish Inquisition descendants,
The Peddlers' catchy Lost Continent song, plus lovely Suzanna Leigh is a wet dress !
This is one crazy, weird movie !!!!

Eric Porter as Captain Lansen, owner of the merchant ship Corita.
The old merchant ship, Corita, bound for Caracas from Freetown in Africa, speeds out in a hurry to avoid a customs search. Ship owner, Captain Lansen (Eric Porter) is on his last voyage in this insurable tub. He has an illegal cargo for a big cash out, high explosives called Phos. B, that goes off violently when damp or wet.
He keeps away from the normal shipping lanes, to stay undetected.
His other dubious cargo, are a bunch of oddball characters attempting to escape to South America. They all have serious reasons for not being on a regular luxury ship.
What a group----

What a group----
Pretty sex starved Unity Webster (Suzanna Leigh) and her sleaze father, Dr. Webster (Nigel Stock), whose wanted for illegal operations. Ex-mistress Eva Peters (Hildegard Knef) who stole a fortune in bearer bonds to get her son released from her ex-lover. Alcoholic Harry Tyler (Tony Beckley) has lots of stolen cash sewn in his sport jacket. He finds it does shrink as he spends money. Ben Carruthers plays crooked Ricaldi, hired to get Eva's bonds back one way or another. The wimpish first officer Hemmings is played by Neil McCallum.
They've paid serious cash to escape their past on this voyage to Uncharted Seas.
The movie's based on that 1938 book by Dennis Wheatley.
These crooked passengers want to escape to Caracas.... fast. No going back.

The always lovely, Suzanna Leigh as Unity. (What a name!) Loved her in the Deadly Bees.
Harry Tyler's custom made cash jacket, unfortunately it shrinks with use.
Played by Tony Beckley (famous for the Italian Job & Gold).
Interesting reading --- Uncharted Seas by Dennis Wheatley---basis for the movie.

Suzanna Leigh avoids being lonely with a crew member. This scene cut from some releases.

The weather is getting bad. A hurricane is coming,
Can the old ship make it through a bad storm?
The first officer Hemmings wants to turn back to Capetown. The captain says to put it to a vote.
These people can't go back. So they vote to keep going, storm or no storm,

The first officer Hemmings wants to turn back to Capetown. The captain says to put it to a vote.
These people can't go back. So they vote to keep going, storm or no storm,

"Is it exposive?" says the mate (Victor Maddern). ---- "Just keep it dry" says the Captain.

As the ship's anchor is being lowered, a chain gear breaks and the anchor slams into the hull.
Water comes pouring into the cargo hold where the explosives are.
The passengers have to get those canisters out of the water quick.

Suzanna Leigh looked great though.
The storms approaches. Will the ship go BOOOOM !!!!
The ship's crew calls for a mutiny against the Captain since they are sitting on one big powder keg.
The ship's crew calls for a mutiny against the Captain since they are sitting on one big powder keg.
Abandon ship !!! Man the lifeboats !!!

Then the film shifts from being a high seas intrigue kinda film, to pure weird & wild.
The lifeboat drifts into a thick seaweed that keeps pulling them away from the ocean currents.
The seaweed also likes to nibble on human flesh, namely the Captain's hand. The injured cook falls overboard to get totally munched up from a man eating plantlike sea creature.
They come to miles of weed in the Sargasso Sea, with many skeletons of ancient ships trapped long ago. Their lifeboat rams into a ship's hull, turning out to be their ship Corita. Luckily it did not blow up, so they settle back on board, but they are stuck in the expanse of killer weed.

The story shifts into overdrive, when a hungry giant one eyed creature attacks the ship, and Suzanna Leigh in particular. Can you blame it? The bad guy Ricaldi (Ben Carruthers)saves her life, but he gets eaten up, as the creature's second prize. Not as tasty as first prize Suzanna.

Corita's passengers are found by a lost local resident named Sarah, that can walk on the weed by using large flat shoes, and lighter than air balloons. She is part of a long lost society, descendants of Spanish Conquistadors, and and other religious settlers for the new world, from way back when. Their ancestors were lost in the weed, and a two small groups grew. One nice group works hard to survive. Sadly, the other group are a bunch of wackos, lead by a boy Prince calling himself El Supremo, and controlled by a hooded eeeeevil priest. He hides his scarred face with a hood.
Human sacrifice to another of those flesh eating monsters. Crab monsters on the attack.
And predictably, a final attack on their galleon fortress using the cans of explosives.
Hey that Phos. B stuff comes in handy to burn up the wackos and the killer weed.
Will they finally escape that small yucky island..... I mean The Lost Continent ????
Dana Gillespie as the overly busty Sarah, known as the Balloon girl in cult movieland.
No, I just can't do the double meaning joke.
Dana Gillespie on the cover of the French magazine, Midi Minuit Fantastique from 1968.
Some of the cheesiest monsters are in this movie. Don't ya just love 'em?

Harry is intently looking.... I mean listening to Sarah's really strange life story.

My Rating ------ B Plus
It's so over the top, you gotta love it !!!
Starting in the 1950's, Hammer Films from England became well known for taking old characters and breathing life back into them, making fine films. Frankenstein, Dracula, the Phantom, Sherlock Holmes, the Werewolf, and the Mummy all became worldwide hits again, thanks to the talents at Hammer. Still very popular everywhere today.
They got a bit more brave in the 1960's and expanded their stories. One Million Years BC, Five Million Years to Earth, the Devil's Bride, the Vampire Lovers, and certainly this film, proved to have very original or at the very least, stories with a big different slant.
Mention must be made that Michael Carreras, who wrote, produced, and directed this film. Usually that spells disaster with just one person at the helm of the ship.
But he did a great job at all 3 jobs.
The actors play their characters seriously, even though the story is totally silly. The settings, and effects are pretty good, even with a low budget. Remember this was made long before computer effects were even invented. The title song sung by the Peddlers, is really a cool one. They actually hold the tune with the words.....the lost continent. And you catch yourself humming it.
The Lost Continent has a great restored release on DVD, easily available.
Back in the 1970's Hammer neglected their negatives of their films, and luckily they pieced together a great restoration from different release negatives. Two scenes were usually cut for years and years. Suzanna's bed scene with the ship's radioman, and the hanging of the same man during the crews' lifeboat escape. But they're now on the DVD.
I first saw it in 1968, and I STILL LOVE IT AFTER ALL THESE YEARS !!!

Blow those wackos up!!!

Pin-Ups of the beautiful Suzanna Leigh.
More recent shot of Suzanna at a Chiller Theater convention.
Met her in 2001, and she was amazed that I had real film prints of her films. Lovely lady!!!
Suzanna also starred in The Deadly Bees, that's one of Supernatural's favorites..
Lovely Hildegard Knef had a long and varied career in show business.
Pretty shots through the years below.

The alluring Dana Gillespie not only performed in films, but performed in a long singing career.

NOW UP NEXT here at SUPERNATURAL THEATER -----
ONE OF MY FAVORITE ITALIAN GIALLO'S !!!!!
ONE OF MY FAVORITE ITALIAN GIALLO'S !!!!!
DARIO ARGENTO'S SECOND FILM
THE CAT O'NINE TAILS
Starring Karl Malden, James Franciscus, and Catherine Spaak.
Directed and Written by Dario Argento
Music by Ennio Morricone
Produced by Salvatore Argento
Italy ---- 1971
NINE TIMES MORE SUSPENSEFUL THAN THE "BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE" ---- THE PICTURE THAT OUT-PSYCHOED "PSYCHO".
Love that catch line.
Giallo means Yellow in Italian. It's a nickname for the scary crime-mystery genre.

In Rome, a blind puzzle maker, Franco Arno (Karl Malden) and his niece Lori (Cinzia De Carolis) as they are walking home, overhear a man in his car blackmailing another person. Arno lives next door to the Terzi Institute for Genetic studies. That night, a break in occurs, and very important secret information is stolen. I mean who steals common information?
The next morning Arno meets Carlo Giordani, a young newspaper investigative writer (played by James Franciscus) who comes to get the facts of the break in.

Giordani's good friend is police Inspector Spini, (Pier Paolo Capponi) who's investigating the robbery. So far nothing appears to be stolen or destroyed. The institute is owned by Professor Terzi below (Tino Carraro), with his daughter Anna (played by Catherine Spaak).

One person knows what was taken. Dr. Calabresi (Carlo Alighiero) a Terzi lab doctor, trying to blackmail the thief. Yes, he was the guy in the car that Arno heard. He calls the thief again during a group meeting at Terzi's office. Ah ha, the thief is involved at the institute. They will meet at the train station to discuss settlement. He tells his fiance Bianca, that he expects to get a big step in his career! Calabresi gets one alright. Right in front of a oncoming train.

A photographer awaiting the arrival of a movie starlet, caught the fall on film.

Argento has a cool way to show when the killer is close by. A quick snap of an eyeball is shown.
Just love that technique!!!
Lori calls her uncle by a nickname, Cookie. Lori sees the murder on the front page, then reads Giordani's article of Calbresi's train death. It was termed an accident. She tells her uncle that he was the man in the car that night getting blackmailed.

The photographer that got the shot was Regghetto (Vittorio Congia),
who is a friend of Giordani's.
Regghetto's asked if he printed the whole nergative or was the picture cropped.

"Seems like someone pushed the poor bastard" he says to Giordani.
Of course, he's the next victim by strangulation and razor blade.

Giordani questions various people from the institute about the robbery, but now to help find the murderer of his friend, and Dr. Calabresi. He meets Dr. Braun (Horst Frank), a gay doctor from the lab, who flirts with Giordani, and then warns him about getting hurt.
Turns out there are seven people to investigate at the institute.
Below, young Dr, Casoni (Also Reggiani), explains to Giordani the big secret project at the institute. A controversial theory of chromosomes XYY, instead of XX, or XY.

This rare pairing of 3 parts of DNA,
shows a criminal, violent tendency in people.

Bianca, the fiance of Calabresi, wants to blackmail the killer also. She found the train station appointment reminder note with the killer's name on it. Now she wants to try blackmail too. Bianca's next on the murder list!
She has no taste though, just look at that wallpaper in her apartment. Creepy! lol.
Anna Terzi and Giordani become lovers. She gives him all the info he needs. But he finds out a dark secret about her. ----- Is she the killer???

Anna confides in Giordani about the staff at the institute during a night on the town.
After the lovemaking back at Giordani's apartment, he offers apparently the only drink in
his place --- milk. Milk??? No wine, or cocktails?
Liquor would have been safer, because the killer already injected poison into the
milk containers.
Lucky for them, Giordani has a sensitive nose for weird poison smells.

The guys are warned by the killer to butt out. --- But Arno says "I like solving puzzles".
When Arno and Lori go have a talk with Bianca, she keeps touching a locket around her neck. That's where she hid the note with the killer's name on it.
Arno & Giordani figure that out and must get it, from her at her crypt. One of many eerie scenes in the film. The killer attacks Arno, and locks Giordani in the crypt. He's frightened,
has a cigarette, and looks around realizing he is really trapped, and says "Oh, shit."
Great scene.
has a cigarette, and looks around realizing he is really trapped, and says "Oh, shit."
Great scene.
Arno opens the door, he stabbed the killer previously with a knife hidden in his walking cane.

A police search of the institute for Lori, and a rooftop chase ensues. Dr. Cassoni, the young genius that discovered the XYY criminal genetic pattern, is the killer.
He brutally attacks Giordani, when he finds Lori.
Cassoni himself has that XYY pattern. I guess he proved his theory.
Then we have a great Argento finale in rapid fire. It keeps you hanging right to the final line. Lori calls out to Arno ---- "Cookie, Cookie!".

My Rating ------ A Minus
This film is still one of my all time favorites. The original reviews back in 1971 went from 1 star to 4 stars. Totally mixed. Got my first 16mm film print of this in 1974, and have had
one ever since. As a film collector, it's one title that's a keeper.
Argento's filming techinque is great. He utilizes the little details in his plot, keeps his pacing going ( it is a murder mystery), and uses the Techniscope wide screen to best advantage. Argento's still making films, and is popular worldwide. Best known for his violent films with a slick style of film making utilizing strong color, unique lighting, beautiful camerawork, and clever editing. His films DEEP RED, and SUSPIRIA are cult legends.
The photography by Erico Menczer is excellent.
Maestro Ennio Morricone had another fabulous musical score with this film.
Morricone is now 85, and still composing. His magnificent 54 year career has 514 film credits. WOW! In my humble opinion, he is the best movie composer of all time.
He also proves my belief in never retiring.
Never retire from your work, cause you'll retire from life!
One odd fact from the 1971 US release. It got one of the first GP ratings, even with nudity, and violent killings. Would have thought it would be an R.
There have been cut editions of this movie on television, and on video over the years. Some down to 90 minutes in length. Horrible. Don't bother with those.
Finally an excellent, original US theater release version, mastered from the
original negative is out there on DVD.
Definitely grab it !!!!

Quirky, funny scene. ---
I have to mention it. Giodani enlists the aid of his old buddy Gigi the loser, to break into Terzi's home safe to get information. Gigi's called a loser, cause he gets caught every time he breaks the law. We first see him in an insult contest at a bar. Gigi wins with the
most profane insults.

Played by Ugo Fangareggi, who is one funny character actor.
A cut scene from the American release? I don't know. Someone email me the answer please.
A rare shot of Argento behind the camera below. This was his second film after his debut of the Bird With the Crystal Plumage in 1969. His career continues to today, with many great films. He and director Mario Bava defined a whole genre of film making.

NASA space rockets are being knocked out of the sky after lift off in Florida. Oh no!
Shades of Dr. No. The FSIC is called in for the mystery. Not the CIA or FBI. No way!
The Federal Security Investigative Commission, or nothing (never heard of 'em).
Captain Patricia Flannigan, known as agent 36-22-36 calls her top agent in to solve the cape caper. Harry Sennet believes in the power of money instead of guns to fight the baddies.
The US Government gives him a checkbook with unlimited funds.
The US Government gives him a checkbook with unlimited funds.
The clues come fast & furious to Harry. Way too easy ones.
Oh yeah, because this is a quickie 007 ripoff made during the 1960's Italian spy film heyday.
Over 300 Eurospy films made in just a few years.

Anthony Eisley (famous from the Hawaiian Eye TV show) as agent Lt. Harry Sennet.
Lovely Wandisa Leigh plays Kara, a helpless victim of the baddies.
She helps Harry, so she's a good girl after all.
We're off to sunny Florida, which looks a lot like southern Spain on the Med.
At first, we see Professor Rooney (Paco Sanz) and his assistant Wilkes investigate radioactive signals coming from under the sea. Their boat is blown to bits from a ray gun fired by the eeeeevil bad guy named Rehte. He runs a criminal empire hiding behind his Rehte beer company located near the Cape. Rehte has a big underwater fortress run by automation, powered by molton lava from beneath the earth. A ray gun protects his lair, along with some masked henchmen, all shown on close circuit TV for Rehte and us to watch. As a bonus in the lethal department, Rehte has a frozen hibernation chamber to freeze his enemies solid. --- Really cool.
The ultra modern sets and costumes are impressive, especially from a low budget film like this.
Sennet gets to know his superior Captain Flannigan very well, before starting his mission.
Diana Lorys as Captain Flannigan, Agent 36-22-36. --- Alert for naive people of our modern age.
The 3 numbers stand for bust, waist, & hip measurements.
Kara's keeping an eye on Harry poolside at the Hotel Florida.
And Harry flirts with the sexy locals barside. This blonde is a femme fatale.
Harry with the very much alive, Professor Rooney, who was forced to be the genius behind Rehte. Kara wants to save her Dad, who's now a frozen pop sickle in Rehte's hibernation chamber. Awwww. Poor Kara.
Rehte's secret underwater city, complete with wide screen TV. ---- Pretty cool set design for 1966!
Harry wants to eliminate Rehte. He zaps Harry when he gets too close.
Folco Lulli plays the eeeeevil Rehte. A beer maker that wants to control the world.
That kind of guy proves how democracies work.
My favorite corny scene in the film comes when Harry attempts to save another rocket from being blown to smithereens. He races to the Cape in a snazzy red Jaguar XKE sports car. The sixties had the coolest cars huh?
Studio close ups of Eisley, some shots of a real Jag, and some absolutely hilarious shots
of a battery powered car model zooming across sand on a model board. Ha Ha Ha !!!!!
Don't you love it!
Reminded me of my model train set when I was a kid.
Two early scenes ---- Patricia and Harry snoop around in a bad guys' house. Turns out the house and a nearby grain silo of Rehte beer is part of the entrance to the underwater lair. Didn't know that grain silos sit next door to beach houses in sunny Florida? They get trapped when Rehte floods the silo chamber. Below, Ursula Parker (Luisa Rivelli) gets the draw on Harry with an acid squirting gun. Better than a water pistol. Bang Bang! Patricia gets the drop on her.
The finale explodes with excitement!!! Literally.
Rehte will shoot a rocket from his underwater city to destroy cities on Earth. Harry and Professor Rooney have to destroy Rehte, the rocket, the underwater base, and get their own asses out of there, all within the 20 minute finale.
Then hot lava starts to flow, destroying the whole damn place.
Snap, crackle, & POP! CRASH !!! BOOOM !!!
Will Harry and Rooney escape certain death?
Will Harry a happy ending with Patricia?
You have to check out the DVD to see.
Rooney and Sennet making their quick escape in an escape pod. Hooray!
And a happy ending in the arms of the lovely Captain Flannigan.
My Rating ----- C Plus (It's a plus, at least the action keeps you from falling asleep)
This was directed by Anthony Dawson, aka. Antonio Margheriti, who directed 57 films during his career. Famous or infamous for his horror, spy, and sci-fi films. This film LB, CASTLE OF BLOOD, and HORROR CASTLE are favorites of mine. Give them a viewing.
This has gone under a few different titles around the world. The US release by Woolner Brothers was both as a single film, and as part of a double feature with another Eurospy film,
RED DRAGON with Stewart Granger, filmed in Hong Kong (poster below).
I saw both in 1967 at the Fort Monmouth Army theater. Military theaters ran a different movie every day. In 1967, it was only 35 cents to see a cartoon with a movie there.
Then it bolted like lightning to television.
In New York, it played constantly on Channel 9 for a few years.
Then Woolner Bros. dumped the film prints, and many lucky collectors like me, grabbed them up.

Lightning Bolt is available from multiple companies on DVD. The 16mm Film Collector has had a few film prints over the years. Two video companies used my film prints to make the video transfer. I still love my Technicolor & CinemaScope print of this title.
Colors on the old Technicolor film stock just bounce of the movie screen.
Rare production still with Antonio Marghariti (Anthony Dawson) setting up a shot, with
Ursula Parker (Luisa Rivelli) and her acid water pistol. Love her costume.
