MATCHLESS
MISSION TOP SECRET
Starring PATRICK O'NEAL, Countess IRA FURSTENBERG,
Donald Pleasence, Henry Silva, & Nicoletta Machiavelli.
Directed by ALBERTO LATTUADA
Produced by Ermanno Donati and Luigi Carpentieri
Music by Ennio Morricone

Get ready for one far out story. A spy that can turn himself invisible!
Only in the wild 1966 Italy could you do that.
Perry Liston (played by suave Patrick O'Neal) is a journalist for the New York Tribune newspaper. Remember newspapers? They were daily news stories printed on many sheets of paper. Well anyhow, he was thrown in prison as a spy in China. Poor Perry being tortured on a fast spinning device by Communist Chinese so-called Intelligence.
He's getting more and more dizzy on the spin cycle, and he keeps confessing the same thing to a very frustrated Chinese general that wants a big cold war spy confession ---
I'm Perry Liston, I work for the N.Y. Tribune.
That's the Trib, the newspaper.

Finally he's thrown back in his cell awaiting a firing squad. His cell mates are two real weirdos, Hank Norris, a rat of an American turncoat (Henry Silva) and a dying old Chinese man.
Perry comforts the near death old man.

Perry comforts the near death old man.
Just after the man succumbs, a mysterious voice from the stiff corpse tells him, since he is a kind, good man, use the old man's magic ring, and you can turn yourself invisible for
short periods of time then reappear.
short periods of time then reappear.
But it can only be used for good, not evil.

Perry's soon brought out to get shot at sunrise. He thinks what the hell, give the ring a try.
Poof ! And bye, bye Perry.
He can stay invisible for 20 minutes, then cannot use the ring again for 10 hours.

He escapes the prison, and winds up in the nearby cottage of the General's pretty mistress, named Olan (played by Elizabeth Wu). He reappears after he takes a shower, and she takes him right to her bed. Lucky Perry. Love these silly Italian spy movies.
Unfortunately, he falls asleep on Olan's leg. Zzzzzzzz.
Turns out Olan is an agent working for the good ole US of A. They fly out of China ASAP.

In New York, Perry's back on the spinning torture machine again. This time American
General Shapiro wants a confession thinking he's a spy for the Chinese.
Poor Perry. Not again.

They find out he's telling the truth about the NY Tribune. Since WW2, he writes his
newspaper column under the pen name of Matchless.

Since he can go invisible at will, the all new spy gimmick, he agrees to work for the US,
to hunt down a rich, criminal mastermind named Gregori Andreanu ( played by the ever popular Donald Pleasence from Halloween and You Only Live Twice). He usually sells international secrets, but now he has 100 vials of strange chemicals. Really something big.
The formula and the something big secret liquid will be up for sale to the
highest world wide bidder. Go get 'em Perry.
C'mon, you gotta save the world from this bad guy!

The gullible Chinese, let crazy Hank out of prison to get the invisibility secret back to China.
Perry escapes Hank in NYC in time to get over to London to go after Andreanu.
Perry is a very lucky man because he gets a fellow agent to assist him. The extremely lovely Arabella (played by Countess Ira Furstenberg), is an artist that has a cover working for Andreanu already. He loves to hang out with beautiful women.
Can you blame him?
Can you blame him?

Four clever scenes come up utilizing the invisibility gimmick to keep the movie moving.
Perry meets Andreanu and his cohorts, at a London boxing match. Andreanu has the match rigged in his favor because he uses a hypnotist to distract the opponent. Perry makes a huge bet against Andreanu's fighter. Using that cool magic ring again, Perry blows cigarette ashes into the evil eye of the hypnotist, and distracts the fighter by using a pin to stab him feeling
like bee stings.
like bee stings.
The second gimmick comes to help Perry steal the vials from Andreanu's British castle. It's a big, ominous castle protected by closed circuit television, many guards, and a silly robot staff that's a laugh. Hey, no problem for invisible Perry. He doesn't find the vials, but finds a safe deposit key & combination for a bank safe deposit box in Hamburg, Germany.
One glitch to their plan, Hank reappears with his hot girlfriend Tipsy (sexy Nicoletta Machiavelli) to fly in by parasail to foil Perry's plan. He joins Andreanu's group to grab
Perry and Arabella.
Third gimmick. Arabella and Perry are off to Hamburg to rob that safe deposit box. No problem. Clever Perry stays in the bank invisible at closing time, gets the vials & formula, hides all night naked till morning, goes invisible again, then escapes with
Arabella's help when the bank opens.
Bingo! Success! But here comes the bad guys!

Sexy Nicoletta Machiavelli gets the draw on Patrick O'Neal.
Sexy Ira Furstenberg gets the draw on Nicoletta. Lucky Patrick.

The fourth invisible man gimmick helps Perry escape the baddies during a big car chase sequence through the city of Hamburg, Germany. Fast driving and stunts, even with a Rolls Royce and Jaguar landing on railroad train flat cars, makes this interesting to watch.
Even with certain shots obviously speeded up.
Or as cinematographers say -- undercranked.
But Arabella's car is a very unique one for 1966. Even unique for today.

Perry and Arabella drive into the harbor to get away from Andreanu & his gang.
Yes drive into the harbor!!! Andreanu sees that and gives it all up.
They use a car that was sold for only a short time in the sixties, called Amphicar.
A car and boat in one! Wow!
Pictures from two advertisements below.
Way back when I was a kid, my Dad and I actually test drove one in the summer of 1965 I believe. The owner of the local dealership took us for a ride .... in a nearby river !!!
It was amazing !!!!
We heard people had trouble with water leaks. Oooops. Bail! Bail!

But it's very cool in a movie. This spy film winds up with a couple of twists for the finale.
But most importantly, Arabella and Perry have a big kiss for "The End".
I mean......can you blame him? She's hot.

My rating ---- C Plus (Can you C Perry?)
This was a silly, enjoyable, guilty pleasure kinda film even back in 1966. Remember agent 007 dominated the spy movie seeing world. The fourth Bond, Thunderball was a mega hit the year before. Just think, the first 007 film to beat Thunderball in box office power just came out last year. A little film called Skyfall.
Within a few years back then, hundreds of Eurospy films came out of the woodwork.
Matchless was just one of these.
Put your 2013 logic away for 100 minutes and have fun.
Back in the late 1970's I met Patrick O'Neal twice in NYC, and found him to be open and very friendly to talk to. I was the first fan he met, that had film prints of 4 of his films.
I got a 16mm film print of Matchless back in the early 1970's from a film dealer in Canada. Hello Andre! Years later, it was used for the film transfer for one video release. It is available from one source on DVD, and streaming as far as I know. Would love to see a pristine version from a good original negative, if one even still exists somewhere.
This is a real almost lost, obscure movie. It could have easily become invisible.---- Enjoy.
The one & only AMPHICAR. Boat & car in one!

If you think music by the great maestro Ennio Morricone, is a big plus. You will love the score to this movie. Finally last year, a soundtrack was produced. It was only 46 years late. Only 2000 cd's made, so keep an eye out for it. It features great vocals from Edda Dell Orso, and I Cantori Moderni too.

Spanish art above. US one-sheet below. -- Japanese mini poster, and poster from Australia also.
The beautiful Princess Ira Furstenberg below.
Publicity shots for Matchless. Wow!!!

Striking poses from other shoots.
Lovely Nicoletta Rangoni Machiavelli starred in many Italian films, including Spaghetti westerns like Navajo Joe (with Burt Reynolds) below.

Pretty Elizabeth Wu (Elizabetta) had a brief career in films. She was one of Osato's secretaries in 007's You Only Live Twice from 1967. ---- Pin-ups below.

Italy----1967
Master Stroke starts off as a Spaghetti western, turns into a diamond heist film, then shifts into an espionage & revenge tale. ---- Four cool plots in one!

Richard Harrison plays an actor that's finishing up filming an Italian Spaghetti western as a bad guy killer. Unfortunately, his gun jams, his director yells at him for messing up the scene, and calls for a break on the studio set. Two men, Max and Miguel (Gerard Tichy & Livio Lorenzon), step up to Harrison, and asks if he is under contract for another picture after this one. Their boss, Mr. Bernard is in Paris, and wants to hire him for a special part.
He goes to meet this mysterious Mr. Bernard (played by the fabulous Thunderball villain, Adolfo Celi). Bernard explains that the part, is taking over a man's identity in London. He must learn every mannerism and fact behind the man, Arthur Lang. He is a top executive for a diamond syndicate, that has control over the secure diamond vaults. Bernard's plan is to rob the syndicate of millions in diamonds with a meticulous robbery. The four split the spoils.
Turns out the actor was a 2 bit crook when he was younger, and is lured in by the quick potential wealth. The gang of four make a promise over a very large drink.

The gang begin their training for the heist. The new Arthur Lang realizes this is one tough part to learn. The guy's speech, mannerisms, details about people that know him, and his work need to be learned --- perfectly. Even though it's only for a short time. One little error, can blow the whole heist up, right in their face. (Hey, remember slide projectors?)

The real Arthur Lang gets kidnapped, and put on ice for awhile. The new Lang begins his toughest acting role yet. Their lives depend on his perfect portrayal.

The new and improved Arthur Lang has two beautiful ladies that can totally blow his cover.
One he knew about, his ever dedicated secretary Dorothy (Mary Arden).
But it turned out Lang has a recent girlfriend that nobody knew about. Uh Oh. The always lovely Margaret Lee plays Evelyn, his girlfriend that also has a secret agenda of her own.
Can she tell the real Arthur from the actor????
Hey think positive, maybe he will be an improvement over the nerdy executive.
Obviously, the new Lang thinks she's hot.
State of the art security to get past (at least for 1967), makes for one suspenseful robbery.
That would be enough for most pictures, but Master Stroke just shifts into overdrive.
Many cool plot twists to unfold.
Well, here we go.........
Bernard turns out to be a high officer for Scotland Yard. He wanted to prove to Van Dorn, the CEO of the diamond syndicate (played by Andrea Bosic) that his vault security stinks.
Bernard's boss at the Yard, Colonel Jenkins (Antonio Casas) thinks there's a lot more to all of it.
Evelyn and the real Lang were up to no good. Embezzlement!
Another bad gang shows itself, and they kill Lang's fence and money launderer!
Bang! They go and kill the real Lang!
Bang Bang! Max and Miguel get shot up too!
Actor Lang is blackmailed by Inspector Bernard into becoming an agent for the Yard.
Because there's another criminal mastermind at work to really wipe out the diamonds!
Actor now agent Lang and Evelyn fall for each other. Of course!
A bigger radioactive robbery gets underway!
Who is the big boss behind it all ?????
The baddies capture actor now agent Lang (stay with me), and Evelyn is in on it too.
They beat him up badly (his face has lots of makeup), but Evelyn helps him to shooting escape.
Lang goes on revenge to find out the real boss. Yeah go get 'em!
Lang goes on revenge to find out the real boss. Yeah go get 'em!
Then the real bad guy discovery scene in an airplane hanger.
You keep guessing till the end.
Harrison and Lee with a happy ending. Even that has a funny twist.

Master Stroke never deserved it's fate.
It has a clever plot, solid characters, good direction, and great music.
It has a clever plot, solid characters, good direction, and great music.
Released in Europe in 1967 with good results.
But never got a theater release or network TV release in the US.
Only distribution to local TV stations. I saw it on Channel 9 in NYC till the mid 70's.
The distributor dumped the few 16mm film prints that existed.
Film collectors grabbed those up.
It is available from two main sources on DVD and Instant internet viewing.
My 16mm film print was used for the transfers back in the 1990's. Unfortunately,
the color dyes on the film were shifting to mainly being red in color, because of the age.
And it was a scanned TV print, not in Techniscope wide screen, like the original release.
But it could have been a total gem of a lost film today. Glad I had a part in it's preservation.
I would LOVE to see a great DVD from a transfer from a good film negative.
Not sure if one exists.
This is one movie that really deserves it!

He's a two fisted gambler, fighter, kisser, drinker, and wise ass spy. Eddie Constantine !!!

Leaders from around the world being killed off one by one. Shot by a number of robotlike assassins with bad suntans and black hypnotic glasses. When killed, their skin turns bleached white. Intellegence agencies find out they were missing kidnap victims from around the world. One unique clue to these assassins, they all had a super rare blood type Zero.
A beautiful woman picks up the hypnotic glasses, after one of her robot assassins are killed.

American intellegence wants to set up an agent as a target for a kidnap. Their master computer using punch cards, shows they have one agent with the zero blood type. A former agent named Al Peterson. Our hero, Eddie Constantine!
We see Al having fun at a Chinese casino with lady luck, and a pretty lady too.
He's soon captured by Lee Wee, a dandy of a Chinese agent. He wants to supply the baddies with more Zero blood kidnap victims for a big cash payoff. He asks Al his vital statistics, age, weight, height, and his all important blood type. Al is 40 plus a few years, and the zero blood type. Lee Wee talks Al into going to Alicante, Spain for a spy job for some quick cash.

He's summoned by the Americans to be an agent again, and what are those vitals?
40 and a few years, and yes, zero type blood. Woosh and flying off to Alicante.
Meanwhile back at Robot Control, we meet head boss baddies, Cecelia and Percy (pretty Francoise Brion, and famous character actor Fernando Rey).
They zap their victims, by hanging them S&M style in a huge bug zapperlike machine.
They become controlled robots with minstrel faces, taking orders through those eyeglasses.

Peterson arrives in seaside Alicante, meeting a sexy lady, Cynthia Lewis (played by lovely Sophie Hardy) who is secretly a agent for Interpol. She wonders what Al is up to, so she keeps real close to him. She even peaks through 2 way glass conveniently set up
between their hotel rooms.

between their hotel rooms.

The low excitement in the spy intrigue department ramps up with almost comedic robot attacks.
They even get Al into a robot trance with those eye glasses, so he can find their lair.
The rousing finale at the baddies ocean side castle have the Chinese coming to the rescue!
No not the cavalry, the Chinese.
The bad guys get their just punishment from the unleashed, crazed robots.
Oh yeah, the robots get even all right.
Eddie Constantine mixes up the signals to all the robots, by throwing all the dials.
Hey the only thing Eddie can mix, is a drink.
For a happy The End title, Cynthia and Al fall for each other...... right in the ocean.
My Rating ----- C Plus (C it, Eddie's great)
90 minutes of pure, non-think entertainment.
This was made at the beginning of Jesus Franco's long career. He just past away this year.
Jesus hit his stride making a kazillion sexual horror movies from the 70's to 80's.
He was probably the most prolific director ever with almost 200 credits to his name.
A huge amount for a director.
I was lucky enough to not only meet Franco and his love of his life, Lina Romay at a Chiller Theater Convention in 1997, but at an unofficial time, talked with them for about 20 minutes.
Obviously I have been fascinated with his career, but I was surprised when "he" was very interested in my long 16mm film collecting hobby (addiction).
He was happy to hear I had 8 of his films on film, and he told me some interesting stories about filming & releasing those titles. They were both very warm and friendly, and we had a fun conversation, even laughing about our differences in words.
It was sad reading about Lina's passing at a young age.
With their long time together, and Franco being much older, his passing came shortly thereafter. ---- I look back and have a great memory of that conversation.
Eddie Constantine was a singer in America, before beginning a big film career in France.
His first role in 1953, playing the comic hard drinking, two fisted FBI agent Lemmy Caution in Poison Ivy. His most famous film worldwide was Alphaville in 1965.
This film was released in European theaters as Cards on the Table, in color.
In 1967, American International Pictures released it on US television in Black & White, retitled as Attack of the Robots. The robot skin color change gag got lost on Black & White TV.
Here's another example of being an almost lost film in today's world.
It's released by 2 video companies in the US that used an old 16mm TV film print, because nothing better was available. The distributor dumped tons of film prints after the
initial TV runs were over.
Seventeen titles of Eddie's feature films are released on video here in the US.
Many years ago, 2 companies used my film prints to transfer to video from.
Very happy that my contribution helped preserve those 17 titles to video.
DVD boxed, or per title releases from the original negatives are now for sale in France. Yes!!!
I've loved Eddie's movies since the days of late night TV showings in the sixties.
Coming soon --- A blog entry about six of Constantine movies.

Eddie Constantine played two famous agents, Lemmy Caution and Nick Carter.
Starting in 1953, Eddie made tons of feature films for almost 20 years in France. They were hits in Europe, and staples on late night American TV in the 1960's. Two are shown here, THE LADIE'S MAN, and LICENSE TO KILL.
Richard Harrison began making films in Italy in the 1960's with the muscleman gladiator peplum, then switched to spy films and westerns. Soon I'll be writing more about his
